Avoid WD like the plague, I have several that have now died – HalfGeek – Washington, DC USA
Avoid Western Digital like the freaking plague. I’ve had it. Yet another drive is now dead. This would be my fourth, I believe. I made the mistake of buying a number of these drives over the past three years, thinking the price was a great deal. I need drives to back up my computer generally, since I work from home for myself on a laptop, and I do a lot of photography, so I also use additional drives to back up my photos, in duplicate (on two different drives). The last two years have been a never-ending nightmare with all of my Western Digital Drives. I have one functioning drive remaining, a good three have died, possibly a fourth (I don’t remember the count any more, it’s been happening for a few years, and at first I thought it was me, or perhaps one fault drive – ha!). And they don’t die, die – they just no longer connection to your computer, or when you get a connection, you get halfway through your download and suddenly the drive disappears and won’t come back no matter what you do. Oh, and because you can’t get the drop to mount to your computer, it means you lose everything that’s on the drive. Heck of a back up if you can’t access it after a year.br /br /I finally, after talking to a Mac consultant friend of mine, bought a Voyager Q – which isn’t a drive, but it permits you to read drives. Basically, you can buy a cheaper drive, without all the fancy plastic housing, and just plop it in the Voyager Q to read it. This way, I can buy better drives, but for a cheaper price than any of this WD garbage. Read my other reviews, I don’t work for a competitor, I’ve been using Amazon for years. I am telling you, do not touch these guys if you want your drive to last longer than a year. Use any other company’s drives. I am so fed up it’s not even funny. The amount of money I wasted on this company. Oh, and I’ve had several different models of their drives, since I bought them over a several year period. All bad. And Mac consultant friend just emailed me, after I wrote him a tirade about my latest drive not working, and he says, and I quote, “I’m over them too.”br /br /As an aside, my 250g Seagate drive is still kicking, even though I bought it years ago before the garbage WD drives. Also, I have a minixpress drive I got several years ago that’s been really good too.

After reading the reviews here, I figured I’d be fine if I just treated the WB MyBook Essential 2TB like I did the 1TB drive I bought 2 years ago: format it, wipe all the junk off the drive, and use it as-is. Unfortunately, that did not turn out to be the case.br /br /The first 2TB WD MyBook Essential that I purchased from my local retailer was badly built: the drive was not lined up with the backplate, so as a result you couldn’t plug anything into it, nor could you adjust the openings and fix the problem. My older MyBook was alarmingly easy to open up, but this model’s body does not appear to be capable of being opened without possibly breaking it. When I peered down into the casing with a flashlight I saw that the hard drive appeared to have just been dumped in there, with no real frame to hold it very well: it balances on some plastic fitttings that keep it from rattling around inside the casing.br /br /The second 2TB which I exchanged this volume for appeared to have been assembled just fine. The ungainly power brick still caused the unit to light up, and the next step, to plug it into the machine, did nothing. Although the setup poster doesn’t actually mention that there’s a power button on the back of the drive, this rather obvious solution also did nothing: I can tell the button is supposed to cause the unit to turn on, but nothing changes, no matter how or for how long I press it.br /br /Which leads me to the website. If you really want to see what an awful and poorly built piece of hardware this is, just go looking through the support pages. I found solutions such as, “If the drive is not responding, be sure you installed drivers for your USB card. USB ports will not work without drivers.” Or, “When the drive is connected to the computer, the setup software automatically runs to install the drive. If the setup software does not automatically run, open folder X on the drive and run the setup program…” (I’m paraphrasing here). In other words, if you don’t see the drive, it’s because the software didn’t install itself. So open the drive (that you don’t see) and run the software (that you can’t see). br /br /The manual puts this problem in its troubleshooting section, and the answer is, “go out to our website and look for Problem ID 207.” 207 is apparently about how to format a hard drive in Windows XP. It would be helpful if I could find more, but all the search results return is…the User Guide, which references the need to look up Problem ID 207 on the Western Digital Website.br /br /I called tech support. It was two hours before close on a weekday and I spent 40 minutes on hold. The person I finally spoke to had a bad habit of occasionally not telling me he was putting me back on hold, but when I could get his attention, we walked through the steps and the verdict was, “Take the second one back to the store – it’s got a fault hard drive.” I didn’t care much for the tech support, and I’m definitely not pleased to hear two different units have two different sets of physical problems–that’s an extraordinarily high defect rate.br /br /I took it back. I also gave up: I think I’m going to just put more internal hard drives in my desktop, turn it into a server, and start backing things up there. And as much as I love Western Digital’s products, I don’t think they deserve any more of my money, effort, or time.

This drive is going back ASAP. What are they thinking putting un-removable backup software on a Mac drive? I have Time Machine. I don’t want or need their inferior backup utility. I used to by WD without even considering another brand. From now on I’ll research and read reviews before I buy.
