The Emancipation of Mimi - Platinum Edition

By the time 2005 rolled around, Mariah Carey was considered a has-been. But as soon as “We Belong Together” topped the charts – and held on for 14 weeks – her Glitter days were long-forgotten. That single was a perfect combination of Mariah’s big ballad past and hip-hop present, with its heavy bass line and a grand finale of her trademark belting. It also notably references old school slow jams from Babyface and Bobby Womack. That old school style is present throughout The Emancipation of Mimi, and it’s the main ingredient in this enjoyable collection. Big Jim Wright assists on “I Wish You Knew” and “Circles,” tracks that recall Diana Ross – with added runs and high notes, of course. “Mine Again” is a big-voiced plea for a second chance that ranks among Mariah’s most soulful and believable songs. Most of the hip-hop numbers are infectious, like the summery “Say Somethin,” with a classic Snoop verse, and “Get Your Number,” featuring a chorus from JD (who oddly sounds just like Nelly). Ironically, her collaboration with Nelly himself, “To the Floor,” is underwhelming and forgettable. Some of the songs do run together, but this is ultimately one of Mariah’s finest and most consistent albums. Several years of unimpressive sales made this return to form that much sweeter. It was great to hear her finally sing with her full voice and look to the past for inspiration. 4 Stars.br /br /”Don’t Forget About Us” and an excellent hip-hop remix of “We Belong Together” are great additions to this re-release.

Early buzz on iThe Emancipation of Mimi/i predicted that this would be the disc to mark “the return of the voice”–the voice being that glass-shattering instrument that propelled Carey to bestselling female artist of all time status–and mostly it is. But because of the small army of talent involved in its assembly, the album is way more than just a comeback vehicle. For proof, try the straight-ahead, look-out-Beyoncé-Mimi’s-still-got-it “Mine Again”; the ’70s-soul cuddle-up “Circles,” a don’t-attempt-on-iAmerican Idol/i love song; or the gospel dazzlers “Fly Like a Bird” and “Stay the Night.” But for songs that steer this disc directly into 2005, no looking back, scan the jewel case for tracks followed by the word “featuring”: “To the Floor,” with Nelly, bumps along to maximum booty-shaking effect, while Twista spins his natural-disaster-force vocals into “One and Only.” Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, and Jermaine Dupri also pitch in; between them and the highwire vocals, iEmancipation/i works the kind of pure-pop magic that sets us all free. i–Tammy La Gorce/ip/pThis platinum edition features four tracks not found on the original release: “Don’t Forget About Us”; “What It Look Like”; “So Lonely (One Only Part II)”; and a remix of “We Belong Together” featuring Jadakiss and Styles P. p/ppspan class=”h1″strongMore Mariah/strong/spantable border=”0″ cellpadding=”4″ width=”100%” cellspacing=”4″pptr class=”tiny” align=”center” valign=”top”tdimg src=”http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000026TE.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg” border=”0″brIMariah Carey/I/tdpptdimg src=”http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000027SV.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg” border=”0″brIEmotions/I/tdpptdimg src=”http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000028VT.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg” border=”0″brIMusic Box/I/td/trpptr class=”tiny” align=”center” valign=”top”ptdimg src=”http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002A46.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg” border=”0″brIMerry Christmas/I/tdptdimg src=”http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000FC6I.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg” border=”0″brI#1’s/I/tdpptdimg src=”http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005MAWM.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg” border=”0″brIGlitter/I/tdp/tr/table/p

Mariah has still got it. I would definately recommend spending the few extra bucks for the platinum edition. I loved this CD so much I bought the platinum one after I had already purchased the first original CD. Stay the Night and Joy Ride are my favorites.

At the time this album came out this was the best album she ever put out. I’d still put it at #2 behind her new album Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel.
