The Book of Basketball, by Bill Simmons, is a massive work on the state of the NBA and how it got to where it is today. If you’re a fan of his blog, The Sports Guy, then you’ll love this book.br /br /br /Simmons discusses the NBA in his typical fashion–smart, funny, informative, and sarcastic. He isn’t afraid to be a fan as well as a sportswriter, and this is why people love him. His writing style flows along easily, and the footnotes in this book–that’s right, footnotes in a sports book–are as interesting as the main subject.br /br /br /The Book of Basketball covers a wide variety of interesting topics relating to the NBA. Simmons plays the “What If” game, going over several scenarios that could have changed the face of the NBA had they played out differently. “The Most Valuable Chapter” dissects some of the MVP awards from the past. But a large portion of the book is dedicated to ranking the 96 best players in NBA history. Simmons divides these 96 into five categories, detailing why he put them where.br /br /br /This is a must-have for any basketball junkie or fan of Simmons’ writing. It’s long–almost 700 pages–but it’s a great read that will have you turning pages for hours.

“The Book of Basketball: The NBA According to The Sports Guy Discount” Overview
There is only one writer on the planet who possesses enough basketball knowledge and passion to write the definitive book on the NBA.* Bill Simmons, the from-the-womb hoops addict known to millions as ESPN.com’s Sports Guy, is that writer. And bThe Book of Basketball /bis that book. brbrNowhere in the roundball universe will you find another single volume that covers as much in such depth as this wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining look at the past, present, and future of pro basketball.brbrFrom the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens–and then closes, once and for all–every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind, five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball.brbrComprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), bThe Book of Basketball /boffers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.brbrbribr* More to the point, he’s the only one crazy enough to try to pull it off. br/i

strongAmazon Best of the Month, October 2009:/strongemThe Book of Basketball/em is a 700-page work of hoops genius that would make Dr. James Naismith beam proudly – and probably blush. Author Bill Simmons, best known as ESPN.com’s “The Sports Guy,” explores the NBA with hilarious insight, brilliant analysis, and a bevy of irreverent footnotes. Simmons is a fan first – a fact best explained in an entertaining foreword by Malcolm Gladwell – and writes from the stands, not the press room. His knowledge and passion for the game provide him with few peers, yet his voice represents those who stick by their teams through thick and thin. As a result, emThe Book of Basketball/em is not just a tribute to hardwood heroes, but also a celebration of yelling at TV sets, revering lucky jerseys, and holding our breath until the final buzzer sounds. Throw in pages of nearly-insane statistical breakdowns (including a projected boxscore from the movie emTeen Wolf/em), and it’s easy to see why fans of all levels should clear shelf space for this instant classic. –emDave Callanan/em

The most fun I had reading a book in a long time.br /Entertaining, funny, and loads of stats and informationbr /Don’t be intimdiated by the amount of pages. I skipped a lot. br /br /A lot of pop culture references which was hard to keep up with. br /Simmons knows a lot of useless stuff but I love it.br /br /Didn’t like all the criticisms of some of the great players: Stockton, K. Malone, Oscar Robertson, etc…br /br /Obviously, Simmons loved certain players more than others: Bernard King, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Johnsonbr /Hates: Vince Carter, Kareem, and Wilt Chamberlian. br /br /But I defintley recommend this book.Good as Advertised – Jason E. TBOB is one of the best books I’ve ever purchased. Simmons does an excellent job of informing and entertaining with this marvelous piece of literature. Footnotes are at times laugh-out-loud funny. Bill did his homework and we’re all the better for it.br /Jason Janke (WI)Wow – JB1031 –
A great read. It’s scary how much Simmons knows about the NBA. Yes the book is enormous, but you know what, it needed to be. Only a few times (during some of the rankings) did I think it dragged on. But overall a great read and you never felt like you were really reading a 702 page book. br /br /Oh and I now know the meaning of “the trinity”, its worth the for the book right there.
